One hundred-sixty General Counsel from Major Corporations Urge Congress to Approve Biden’s Legal Services Corporation (LSC) Budget Request
WASHINGTON – Today, general counsel from 161 large corporations sent a letter urging Congress to approve at least the $700 million the President’s Budget for FY2023 recommends for the Legal Services Corporation.
“The pandemic has only exacerbated the level of unmet legal need experienced by low-income Americans. Civil legal aid providers have been first responders as people around the country found themselves in need of immediate legal help. Many remain at risk of losing their home or their income, or other important needs,” said NLADA President April Frazier Camara.
“These problems can often only be resolved with legal assistance. It is essential that Congress does the right thing and approve, at the very least, President Biden’s budget request. It will ensure that the Legal Services Corporation can continue supporting the various legal services providers on the frontlines of helping those in need.”
In the letter, the legal leaders wrote that well over two-thirds of households in rural areas, including children, veterans, and people with disabilities, experience one or more civil legal problems each year. The letter also says that leaving legal issues unaddressed weakens our economy and workforce, which directly impacts the success of our nation’s companies.
