Legal Aid of Western Michigan (LAWM): We are a nonprofit law firm. We deliver free, high-quality legal help to people who live in or near poverty. Clients come to us when civil (non-criminal) legal problems threaten their lives and livelihoods. Some of our clients:
• face evictions or foreclosures on their homes.
• seek safety from domestic violence, help with divorces, and stable child-custody arrangements.
• pursue access to public benefits that ensure healthcare, food- and income-security.
Here is more information on the kinds of cases we handle, which include consumer debt, tax, education, and other poverty-law issues. LAWM serves 17 West Michigan counties from five offices: Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Muskegon, Holland and St. Joseph.
Position: We are seeking a law student intern to assist with discovery project in a strategic litigation case including but not limited to document review.
The majority of the work can be handled remotely, however bi-weekly check-in meetings at LAWM’s office in Grand Rapids may be required.
Compensation: Limited, paid positions: approximately 15-20 hours/week at $17/hour. This internship will end no later than December 31, 2022 and/or a maximum of 150 hours.
Qualifications:
• Required: current 1L or 2L at an ABA-accredited law school
• Preferred: Demonstrated commitment to public interest law or public service
