Position Description:

ABOUT THE CENTER FOR GENDER & REFUGEE STUDIES
The Center for Gender & Refugee Studies defends the human rights of courageous refugees seeking asylum in the United States. With strategic focus and unparalleled legal expertise, CGRS champions the most challenging cases, fights for due process, and promotes policies that deliver safety and justice for refugees. We are the trusted partner and proven resource for legal teams and human rights organizations and bring invaluable data and compelling personal stories to shape the public narrative. We use strategic litigation to advance sound asylum laws and protect due process rights. Through policy advocacy and education, we provide critical expertise to policymakers at all levels of government, leading the movement to honor our commitments to refugees under U.S. and international law. By providing technical assistance and training, we empower advocates to take on complex asylum cases, equipping them with the tools they need to craft winning arguments and secure protections for their clients.

THE ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
CGRS seeks a talented undergraduate or recent college graduate intern to serve as a paid Communications Intern, who will help shape the messaging and outreach strategies of our Technical Assistance (TA) program. The intern will gain hands-on experience in a small nonprofit work environment and the satisfaction of contributing to an organization that defends refugee and immigrant rights. Projects may include:

  • Strategizing communications between CGRS’s TA program and community of attorneys who receive support
  • Developing social media graphics and copy about the TA program
  • Creating compelling content for CGRS’s website, including written copy
  • Conducting targeted outreach to drive engagement in CGRS’s TA program

The intern will work closely with CGRS’s TA team and have the opportunity to network with CGRS colleagues. Given our small office and fast-paced work, we afford interns a high degree of responsibility from the start. Accordingly, interns must be self-motivated, responsible, and able to work with limited supervision. This role will be hybrid, working partially in person in CGRS’s offices on the campus of UC Law San Francisco and partially remote.

Requirements:
  • Availability of 10 – 20 hours a week for ten weeks, beginning in January 2024
  • Excellent writing and research skills
  • Strong interest in social justice and immigration issues
  • Experience with creating social media graphics (using Canva and/or Adobe Creative suite)
  • Interest in learning more about working in the legal space and/or refugee law
  • Current college student or recent college graduate
  • Ability to work independently and within a team
  • Ability to protect the confidentiality of our work and our communications
