Under the general direction of the Attorney Supervisor (Director of Non-Capital Appellate), Attorney IV supports the development of attorneys at the Office of the State Public Defender (OSPD) in meeting the qualifications to be lead counsel in death penalty cases. Attorney IV is an advanced-level appellate defense attorney qualified in California to be lead counsel in death penalty cases. Attorney IV will work with individual attorneys at OSPD to become knowledgeable about the facts, records, and law in their cases. Attorney IV will provide training and feedback to attorneys on writing and legal issue development in their cases. Attorney IV is expected to work collaboratively with all staff. Additionally, as part of their responsibilities, Attorney IV will recognize the training needs for all OSPD attorneys. Attorney IV will work with the Director of Non-Capital Appellate and the Director of Legal Training to meet those needs. The Attorney IV will act as a resource for legal
staff and take the initiative in improving OSPD’s ability to represent its clients by providing support and mentorship.
Attorney IV requires active membership in The California State Bar and have six years of legal experience in the practice of law*, one year of which must have been at a level equivalent to an Attorney III or higher
