The Project: Mayor’s Office of Community Safety (MOCS)
The Position: The paralegal will provide support and assistance to clients who come to LAFLA for services. Under the supervision of an attorney, the paralegal will provide direct legal services to individuals who have been arrested or convicted and face economic and social barriers due to their record. This position involves working collaboratively with staff, community partners, and volunteers to deliver holistic reentry-related services. The paralegal will assist clients with a variety of legal issues, such as criminal record expungement and reduction, driver’s license suspensions, occupational licensing, housing law, public benefits, employment law, and family law. There are opportunities to develop systemic impact projects and to participate in broader dialogue about reentry issues. The position will also entail working with volunteers in expungement clinics and participation in community events.
NOTE – This position is part of a special program created using designated funds. There is no assurance of ongoing funding or employment beyond May 2025 (or 1 year from hire date).

QUALIFICATIONS:
• A four (4) year degree preferred; or Paralegal certificate or one (1) year relevant work experience;
• Experience in providing assistance to clients who have been in the criminal justice system is preferred;
• Experience with clean slate work such as petitions to dismiss criminal records is preferred;
• General knowledge of eviction defense, government benefits, family law or child support preferred;
• Self-motivated, takes initiative, ability to learn quickly;
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
• Organized, with ability to work on high-volume caseload; and
• Ability to be flexible in job duties.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
• Conduct client intake and prepare legal forms;
• Work in conjunction with the staff attorneys;
• Collaborate with Community-Based Organizations;
• Conduct community education presentations;
• Assist clients with obtaining DOJ live scans;
• Participate in virtual and in-person clinics; and
• Collect client data for grant reporting purposes;
• Contribute to the organization’s DEI plan and goals (via surveys, interviews, etc), supporting all DEI initiatives and helping to promote inclusion in a thoughtful way;

HYBRID WORK SCHEDULE - Depending on job classifications, some LAFLA staff are working on a manager approved hybrid work schedule, with the ability to work remotely up to half the week, if preferred, after the probationary period. The successful candidate must be local and willing to work from the assigned LAFLA office.
