STAFF ATTORNEY | MEDICAL-LEGAL PROJECT

Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA) is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Staff Attorney to join our Medical-Legal Partnership (MLP) team in San Antonio. This role offers the opportunity to work closely with medical professionals to address the legal needs of low-income families and improve their health outcomes by addressing social determinates of health. Through this holistic, collaborative approach, attorneys in the MLP team help vulnerable patient-families navigate legal issues such as education, public benefits, and housing, and more.
TRLA operates one of the largest civil legal services programs in the country, and our MLP program is based on a national model that integrates legal assistance directly into healthcare settings.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
· Provide civil legal services to eligible clients, focusing on legal matters that directly affect health
· Partner with medical professionals to identify and address legal issues that are affecting patient health; educate healthcare professionals on poverty, the social determinants of health, and how legal assistance can improve patient outcomes
· Work closely with MLP legal paraprofessionals and healthcare providers to ensure holistic support for clients
· Maintain proper documentation, timekeeping, and case reporting, ensuring compliance with all applicable requirements, including private attorney involvement and permissible legislative and rulemaking activities
· Stay current on changes in the law and legal procedures relevant to the MLP practice areas; provide guidance and mentorship to colleagues as needed
· Develop and maintain strong working relationships with healthcare partners, medical staff, and other community-based organizations to strengthen the MLP program’s impact
Compensation and Benefits:

Qualifications and Preferences:
· Must be licensed to practice law in Texas, eligible to waive into the Texas Bar, or willing to take the next available Texas bar exam; TRLA will consider applicants with a Uniform Bar Exam (UBE) score transferable to Texas
· Functional fluency in Spanish is strongly preferred, as many clients served are Spanish-speaking
· Demonstrated dedication to providing legal services to low-income and vulnerable communities
· Ability and desire to work in an interdisciplinary team with medical professionals, attorneys, and community partners to address complex, multifaceted issues
· Experience working in a Medical-Legal Partnership or similar interdisciplinary setting
· Familiarity with legal issues in MLP priority areas such as education, public benefits, housing, and healthcare access
· Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills, with a demonstrated ability to manage multiple moving parts in a complex legal setting
· A clear vision for the future development of the MLP and a commitment to innovation in service delivery
