Northwest Justice Project (NJP) seeks an Assistant Managing Attorney to assist in oversight and supervision of the CLEAR unit. (Coordinated Legal Education, Advice, and Referral)
CLEAR’s new Assistant Managing Attorney will join a team of Assistant Managing Attorneys working with CLEAR’s Managing Attorney to provide oversight and supervision of CLEAR, NJP’s telephone-based legal aid and referral unit. The CLEAR team consists of a staff of approximately 25 attorneys and 3 legal assistants.
CLEAR staff work together as part of NJP’s statewide law firm, and in collaboration with Volunteer Lawyer Programs (VLPs) and other Alliance for Equal Justice legal aid providers, to bring high-quality civil legal services to low-income Washingtonians. CLEAR attorneys provide a range of services (including advice by phone, document preparation, and negotiation with opposing parties) to people across Washington on a wide variety of legal issues. CLEAR services protect victims of domestic violence, preserve affordable housing options, improve access to health care and income opportunities, protect vulnerable consumers, overcome barriers to employment, help clients access justice systems, and provide other assistance toward securing the long-term well-being of individuals and communities.
The assigned office location is flexible. A hybrid or remote schedule may be considered if the person hired is eligible under NJP’s Telecommuting Policy. Occasional travel will be necessary for meetings/trainings.
Compensation: Specific salary will be based upon relevant experience: $83,142 to $143,712. We provide a comprehensive benefits package that includes 100% paid employee health premiums and significant premium shares for family health premiums, as well as generous time off.

Requirements: 

1. Minimum five years’ legal experience
2. Washington State Bar Association membership in good standing or active license in another state with the ability to obtain WSBA membership by motion is required
3. Knowledge of at least one of CLEAR’s major practice areas (housing, family, consumer/debt, public benefits) and willingness to develop knowledge in others
4. Experience performing a broad range of brief services in a hotline setting, clinics, or another setting focused on preparing litigants to proceed pro se
5. Familiarity with the civil legal aid delivery system in Washington State
6. Familiarity with CLEAR referral partners in Washington State
7. Ability to comfortably learn and use contact center software
8. Ability and willingness to receive and provide constructive criticism in a positive way
9. Ability to appreciate the differing strengths, skills, and styles of a diverse staff
10. Good judgment, ability to handle stress, and willingness to both take initiative and work as part of a team
11. Strong oral and written communication skills
12. Successful experience mentoring other attorneys, paralegals, and/or law students
13. Commitment to advancing racial equity, and experience with incorporating racial equity principles into advocacy and leadership
14. Commitment to building a collaborative team and fostering trust, including between managers and staff
15. A demonstrated commitment to NJP’s client communities and to addressing systems of oppression
