Position Description:

OLC is a legal services program committed to achieving justice for the low-income communities of Oregon by providing a full range of the highest quality civil legal services. OLC operates eleven regional offices, a state support unit, legislative advocacy unit, and statewide farmworker program. OLC works closely with Legal Aid Services of Oregon and other partners in Oregon’s coordinated civil legal services delivery system.

Position: Oregon Law Center (OLC) seeks two full-time Paralegals to work on a residential eviction legal defense program for low-income clients. These positions do not require formal paralegal certification or training. These positions are remote and flexible on the paralegals’ county of residence (within Oregon) and are intended to serve clients statewide.

OLC’s Eviction Defense Project is a partnership with Legal Aid Services of Oregon and the Center for Nonprofit Legal Services. We assist tenants who are facing eviction from residential housing with the goal of making a real difference in clients’ lives and helping them, whenever possible, to maintain housing stability.

Responsibilities: The Paralegal will support a team of 3 or more attorneys representing tenants facing eviction. The Paralegal’s primary responsibility is to share intake responsibilities amongst the 8-person Paralegal team to manage a high volume of requests from tenants for eviction defense support. Second, the Paralegal will perform regular data entry tasks, including tracking case data internally and entering program outcomes data into the State and City’s Homeless Management Information Systems (HMIS). Other responsibilities may include litigation support – printing and mailing, investigative assistance, document management, for example – on fast-paced eviction defense cases. Responsibilities may also include, but to a lesser extent, outreach to low-income tenants and communities, including building relationships with culturally-specific community-based organizations. The Paralegal will provide assistance to callers with their connections to non-legal resources such as rent assistance programs.

Requirements:

• Demonstrated commitment to justice for low-income communities.
• Strong interpersonal communication skills, and a flexible and curious attitude.
• Excellent written and verbal skills.
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to work independently to complete tasks.
• Desire and ability to work successfully as part of a team.
• Proficient use of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams), Adobe, Zoom, and cloud-based
phone services.

Preferences:
• Experience working with low-income communities.
• Spanish language skills are a plus.
• Experience in: legal intake calls, preparation and filing of legal pleadings, document management, conducting case-
related investigative research and use of case management software.
