2021 Annual Conference Agenda

CLE Info

The NLADA Annual Conference is the leading national training event of the year for the civil legal aid, indigent defense, and public interest law communities. This year’s program will be no different, with both virtual and in-person programming! For the virtual program, we will apply for CLE accreditation in most jurisdictions. For the in-person program, we will apply only in Tennessee. Assuming we receive accreditation from Tennessee, Attorneys outside Tennessee can self-apply in their own states.

Virtual Programming

Our virtual conference platform is ready and live! If you registered for the conference, you can go to the site to login and complete your profile. You will need to do this before you can access sessions beginning on November 9. To login, go to the event site: www.nlada2021annual.org.

In-Person Programming — See the full schedule here

We will offer limited in-person training in Nashville, Tennessee, on Thursday, November 11, and Friday, November 12. Training will run from 8:00-11:00 a.m. (Central Time) each day so that you can participate in the virtual programming, which begins at 12:00 noon/11:00 a.m. (Eastern/Central Time). We may also re-convene for additional informal programming after 5:00/4:00 p.m. (Eastern/Central Time) when the virtual programming concludes.

In order to protect the health and safety of our community, NLADA will offer small group trainings with very limited registrations for the following training programs. You will be required to select one of these programs when you register (full program details available here):

1. Litigating Race & Bias (hosted by the Black Public Defender Association)
This will be a skills-based training for public defenders and civil legal aid attorneys. Attendees will receive hands-on litigation strategies and tools and will participate in small group sessions uniquely designed for civil and criminal law proceedings.

2. Balancing the Bench: Pathways to Federal Judicial Appointment for Public Defenders and Civil Legal Aid Attorneys (hosted by Demand Justice)
For too long, our judiciary has not reflected the diversity of the legal profession, with former corporate lawyers and prosecutors overwhelming judges with experience representing individuals and serving the indigent. If you've ever thought about becoming a federal judge — even just as something to consider one day — come learn what it takes and how to embark on the path!

3. Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Playbook (General Training) (hosted by the NLADA Insurance Program)
Many NLADA members have signed the FAIR Pledge, and this training will provide a toolkit on how to implement the goals outlined in the FAIR Pledge. The toolkit includes a roadmap on how to develop and implement anti-racist practices within your agency and how to contribute to efforts to change the systems that drive inequity.

4. Addressing 21st Century Challenges in Civil Legal Services
Sessions in this track will address: amplifying Civil Legal Aid through collaborations and partnerships, measuring and demonstrating the impact of Civil Legal Aid, growing a culture of anti-poverty advocates, and recruiting and retaining the next generation of Civil Legal Aid Leaders.

Each of these four training sessions will offer hand-on tools and provide a space for intimate small group conversation (but socially distanced for COVID!). Attendees will learn from national experts and tackle cutting-edge issues that affect the client, civil, and defender communities.

COVID Protocols

All attendees will be required to attest when they register that they will follow the following COVID Protocols on site:

  • All attendees must be fully vaccinated and show proof of vaccination at on-site check-in.
  • All attendees must wear face masks in conference areas (unless eating or drinking). NLADA will provide masks.
  • All attendees will maintain six feet distance from other attendees in sessions and other conference spaces.

To help maintain a safe environment, NLADA and/or the venue will provide masks, hand sanitizer stations, and alcohol/disinfectant wipes. Microphones and lecterns used by presenters will be cleaned between uses. Food functions will not have open buffet lines. All food stations will be attended or there will be individually wrapped servings.
