NLADA Legal Aid Training Series:
Advancing Your Work Through Federal Funding

Civil legal aid is eligible for millions of federal grant dollars each year. Could your program use help unlocking these funds? Partnering with organizations on federal programs is an effective way to combat the effects of poverty and leverage federal grants to enhance your work.

NLADA is hosting an intensive training for civil legal aid providers on how to successfully apply for and implement non-LSC federal funds. This interactive training will feature representatives from the White House Legal Aid Interagency Roundtable (WH-LAIR), federal agencies, and community organizations that partner with legal aid.

The daylong curriculum is focused on both new and traditional federal funding sources, the types of legal aid work these sources support, and overcoming barriers to securing these funds.

Workshop agenda includes discussion and brainstorming on:

  • Best practices and strategies for securing federal grants and incorporating a legal aid component into federal programs serving low-income people, such as domestic violence, housing, human trafficking, medical-legal partnership, reentry, veterans, or victims of crime
  • Successful methods and important decisions in pursuing and implementing specific grants: who identifies opportunities, who forges partnerships, who writes the proposal, who develops the project and more
  • Strategies for developing successful and sustainable partnerships
  • Opportunities and challenges around “hot topic” funding priorities to inform future advocacy
  • Effectively communicating legal aid’s role in advancing the mission of federal agencies
