Supporting Our Members' Missions
The National Legal Aid & Defender Association (NLADA) has championed equal justice since our founding in 1911. At the heart of our work are our members – both organizations and individuals – who form a powerful and diverse network committed to quality legal representation for those who cannot afford counsel. Supporting and strengthening the work of members is our mission. We do this in a myriad of ways. Our advocacy at the federal level advances the goals and expertise of the legal aid and public defense communities in congress and at the Legal Services Corporation, defending and extending funding opportunities and effecting legislation which impacts the work of legal and public defense attorneys. The conferences and trainings we've become known for provide invaluable and unparalelled opportunities for service providers to connect with one another, to share skills, and to develop professional skills towards more building more effective and holistic practices. Indeed, members receive substantial disocounts for these conferences, and for our Annual Conference, which have become the premier educational trainings in the equal justice community. Members also receive discounts on publications produced and/or supported by NLADA, allowing members access to a substantial and constantly updated body of relevant research.
Another crucial way that NLADA benefits its members is through technical assistance. The Defender Legal Services Team, for example, works closely with programs to improve advocacy in criminal justice reform and provides guidance when firms are looking to increase funding, better utilize data and research, and optimize human resources. Likewise, our Civil Legal Services Team helps organizations navigate LSC regulations and supports programs as they seek funding from non-LSC sources. What's more, NLADA's Affinity Programs offer specially designed tools and programs to members uniquely designed to benefit practitioners in the equal justice field. NLADA's Insurance Program, for example, offers member offices comprehensive professional liability coverage at highly competative rates by creating the only member-controlled marketplace serving the public defense and civil legal aid communities.
