Position Description: 

Reporting to the Managing Attorneys of the Criminal Defense Practice and Civil Defense Practice, the Supervising Social Worker will supervise and coordinate the work of each practice’s social work team as well as carry a small caseload of their own clients.  The person in this role will:

  • Supervise both the Criminal Defense Practice and Civil Defense Practice social workers and client advocates who are responsible for:
  • Gathering information and preparing mitigation reports for prosecutors and courts;
  • Conducting client interviews and assessments to determine social service needs, as well as assisting clients in securing relevant services and advocating with those service providers;
  • Providing crisis management;
  • Advocating for clients at an array of case conferences;
  • Interviewing incarcerated clients in local, state, and federal detention facilities; 
  • Carry a small caseload of their own clients by providing them the services listed above;
  • Work as part of the interdisciplinary team, including attorneys and other non-attorney advocates, to determine case strategy;
  • Conference supervisees’ cases and ensure training opportunities are available to staff;
  • Respond quickly and communicate clearly with clients, their families, and case workers;
  • Develop and oversee field placement program through MSW programs affiliated with Columbia University, NYU, Fordham University, Hunter College, etc. Must be willing to complete SIFI course as required;
  • Develop strong relationships with service providers to address client needs;
  • Represent NDS at meetings outside the office with other legal service organizations and at government hearings regarding indigent legal services.
Requirements: 

NDS is seeking applicants with a demonstrated commitment to indigent defense, social

justice issues and/or the Upper Manhattan communities;

  • Must possess a Master’s Degree in Social Work and be licensed;
  • Must possess at least five years of direct services with clients involved in the child welfare and/or criminal justice systems;
  • Must possess experience working in an interdisciplinary setting;
  • Must possess experience working with clients with mental health issues;
  • Must be able to provide supervision from both a clinical and interdisciplinary perspective;
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal, analytical, writing, and communication skills;
  • Must possess strong organizational skills in order to supervise staff carrying high caseloads in a fast-paced environment;
  • Must be comfortable in a court environment;
  • Bilingual applicants are encouraged to apply.  Spanish language fluency is preferred.
