Position Description: 

The Virginia Indigent Defense Commission (VIDC) is now accepting applications for the position of Investigator I in the Richmond Public Defender Office. The qualified candidate will be a self-motivated individual responsible for a variety of investigative work for public defense cases. The VIDC is dedicated to protecting and defending the rights and dignity of our clients through zealous, compassionate, high-quality legal advocacy. The Richmond Public Defender Office is committed to providing dedicated, compassionate, client-based, and community embedded representation for the indigent clients that we represent. The Investigator I reports to the Public Defender of the Richmond Office and is employed at will. The successful candidate will be subject to a fingerprint based criminal background check.

Duties:
This position is responsible for conducting defendant and witness interviews and otherwise gathering information in the preparation of cases. The position requires appearance in court as needed. Additional duties include obtaining documents, taking photographs and measurements, serving subpoenas and any other steps necessary for a thorough investigation as assigned by team supervisors. The position requires consistent collaboration with attorneys and support staff and the ability to build rapport with all members of the public defender team. Applicants must have a willingness to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, as investigations require.

Requirements: 

• Bachelor’s degree from a four-year accredited college/university or significant prior experience in investigation or law enforcement.
• Knowledge of the criminal justice system including court proceedings as well as experience using investigative techniques and procedures.
• Prior criminal investigation experience.
• Valid driver’s license and transportation.
• Experience using Microsoft Office products and internet research tools.
• Skills in time management and organization as well as the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team driven environment.
• Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.

Salary range: 
$41,407.00 + State Benefits
