The Law Office of the Public Defender in Augusta, Georgia is seeking applications for an Assistant Public Defender in its misdemeanor division. Assistant Public Defenders assigned to the misdemeanor division represent clients in the State Court of Richmond County who have been charged with misdemeanor offenses and in the Civil and Magistrate Court of Richmond County who have been charged with ordinance violations. Additionally, attorneys in the Misdemeanor Division assist our Juvenile Division with court appearances and trials. Attorneys in the Misdemeanor Division typically transition into felony practice in a year to two years after starting with our office.
The Augusta Judicial Circuit Public Defender's Office is the third largest Public Defender’s Office in Georgia. We represent clients in Superior Court in Burke County, Columbia County, and Richmond County and in State Court, Civil & Magistrate Court, and Juvenile Court in Richmond County, and in the Appellate Courts in Georgia. The Office has 36 attorneys, 8 fact and mitigation investigators, and 13 support staff. The office is located in a renovated historic building in downtown Augusta and includes a mock courtroom for training and trial preparation. Members of this office are part of a team who are dedicated to providing superior client-centered representation. In addition, you will have the opportunity to gain CLE credit through in-house training that is designed to enhance litigation skills, evidence practice, and legal writing.
Ideal candidates will be a current member in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia, eligible to immediately waive into the Bar, or able to be provisionally admitted.
