LASMNY is a non-profit public interest law firm. We provide free legal information, advice and representation to people who are unable to afford a lawyer. The program area includes (13) counties: Broome, Chenango, Cayuga, Cortland, Delaware, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Oswego and Otsego. In addition, our Farmworker Law Project services the entire New York State out of our New Paltz Office.

LASMNY is actively seeking one (2) full-time Staff Attorney to represent domestic violence and sexual assault survivors in Oneida, Herkimer and Madison Counties. The position is based in our Utica office and reports the Managing Attorney.

Essential Job Functions
The staff attorney will provide direct and comprehensive legal services to eligible clients including advice, negotiation, motion practice and litigation. Specifically, will offer holistic services by representing clients in family law matters, including divorce, custody/visitation, paternity, support violations, family offenses and abuse/neglect proceedings, and other civil matters, including bankruptcy and public benefits, needed to break the cycle of violence. Will engage in education and outreach efforts targeting community members, advocates and service providers. Will comply with all Legal Services Corporation (LSC) regulations, LASMNY policies and procedures and grant-based reporting requirements.

Requirements: 

Job Qualifications
The successful candidate must be admitted to the New York State Bar. Law Graduates may be considered with strong writing backgrounds. Trial experience is preferred. Commitment to serving indigent community members. Three to five years of legal experience preferred. The candidate will demonstrate excellent written and verbal advocacy, legal research, problem solving and organizational skills. Ability to work independently, efficiently and collaboratively with individuals both within and outside LASMNY. Bilingual or multilingual a plus.
