Our team of over two hundred staff members – all of whom are public defenders at heart – consists of over 110 lawyers, plus support staff, investigators, social workers, immigration attorneys, and more. The office is led by the ninth Public Defender, and first African-American Public Defender in the history of Alameda County, Brendon Woods. It is through the zealous defense of each of our clients that we advance criminal justice reform, fight systemic racism, and end mass incarceration.

Our mission is to zealously protect and defend the rights of clients through compassionate and inspired legal representation of the highest quality, in pursuit of a fair and unbiased system of justice for all. The Alameda County Office is one of the oldest Public Defender offices in the nation, chartered in 1927 by Earl Warren who later became Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court.
