Join a nonprofit organization that provides equal access to legal services. The Justice & Diversity Center of The Bar Association of San Francisco (JDC) has an exciting opportunity to join our team as Supervising Attorney for our Federal Pro Bono Project.
About JDC:
JDC provides free legal services to low-income people. JDC staff serves 8,500 indigent clients a year with volunteer attorneys, interpreters, and law students. JDC’s holistic advocacy approach addresses our clients’ social service needs in addition to their legal needs.
About the Job:
The Federal Pro Bono Project is a partnership between JDC and the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. The Project provides pro se litigants with limited scope staff-based assistance at Legal Help Centers in the San Francisco and Oakland courthouses[1] and facilitates pro bono attorney placements when ordered by the Court. The Supervising Attorney staffs the Legal Help Center; provides brief advice and information to pro se litigants; assists with drafting and editing filings; conducts legal research; explains court rules, procedures and orders; and develops templates for litigants’ use. The attorney also screens cases for potential referral to pro bono attorneys, finds and matches litigants with pro bono attorneys, and recruits and supports pro bono attorneys who volunteer with the Project.
The attorney supervises a part-time Legal Help Center staff attorney and part-time legal assistant. The Project team members recruit and maintain relationships with pro bono counsel and law firms, coordinate pro bono placements, collect and interpret data for Project evaluation and reports, and recognize volunteers. The Supervising Attorney works closely with the Court and JDC’s Director of Pro Bono Legal Services, and attends conferences as a representative of JDC and the Project.
