ACCE Legal Mission:
Provide legal services in the pursuit of improving the lives of California's traditionally underserved residents, including communities of color, low-income and working families, and undocumented people, by carrying out legal work that fosters organic leadership development, policy creation, robust civic participation, and broad community empowerment.

LOS ANGELES EVICTION DEFENSE PROJECT
In the face of the ending of the eviction moratorium in Los Angeles, ACCE LA secured two years of funding to provide eviction defense for City Council Districts 8, 9, and 10. These are core areas where ACCE is active. Members articulated an increase in need for eviction defense and anti-displacement legal services. Attorneys will focus exclusively on serving tenants living in these districts.

The Position: Staff Attorney – LAED

Key Duties and Responsibilities – Staff Attorney–LAED:
Supervised by the Legal Director and Senior Staff Attorney. All documents filed with the court are reviewed by a supervisor.
Attends a weekly case review meeting and weekly 1-1 meetings with supervisor.
Position is 38 hours a week. Hours are generally 9-5 for in-office responsibilities but are flexible in response to court schedules and legal clinics. Attorneys are expected to attend monthly legal clinics. It is expected that the attorney will adjust their schedule so as not to work more than 8 hours a day. Attorneys will focus on eviction defense.
Attorney will do the following:
Represent low-income tenants in unlawful detainer cases and rent board hearings. Ensure that all advocacy is done in a zealous and client-empowering manner. Run a monthly evening community legal clinic. Provide follow-up case work that comes from the clinic.
Assist pro per tenants in mediation and settlement negotiations at our monthly Courthouse Clinic.
Work collaboratively with ACCE organizers on campaigns related to stopping displacement.
Participate in collaborative partnerships with other community and legal services organizations providing similar services.
Complete administrative tasks, such as those related to grant management and reporting.
Participate in ongoing professional development to improve client services.
Additional tasks as assigned by supervisor.

Salary and Benefits:
Starting salary for this exempt position is $68,000 – $85,000 dictated by the ACCE Institute salary scale.
Benefits include fully paid health insurance (medical, dental, and vision) for employees, life and disability insurance, and generous paid leave (vacation, sick, and holidays);

Requirements: 

Minimum Qualifications:
J.D. required, member of the California State Bar in good standing.
Ability to manage a demanding case load; excellent time management, priority-setting and organizational skills.
Experience with or strong interest in community organizing.
Demonstrated commitment to racial justice.
Spanish language fluency is highly preferred.
Excellent written and oral advocacy skills.
Ability to work effectively with a diverse range of groups, including people of color, immigrants, non-English speakers, people with mental disabilities, law students, service providers, government employees, community partners, elected officials, and law school faculty.
Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and demonstrated ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
Ability to learn-on-the-job and work successfully in a high-volume, dynamic environment.
Unlawful detainer or other relevant litigation experience preferred.
Ability to travel to visit clients, attend court and engage with the community in-person in Alameda County, as needed to perform responsibilities of this position.
