The Position: Senior Staff Attorney – EDLA

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Supervised by the Legal Director. Attends a weekly case review meeting and weekly 1-1 meetings with supervisor.
Position is 38 hours a week. Hours are generally 9-5 for in office responsibilities but are flexible in response to court schedules and clinics. Attorneys are expected to attend monthly legal clinics. It is expected that the attorney will adjust their schedule so as not to work more than 8 hours a day.
Attorneys will focus on eviction defense. After the 2 year anniversary, policy and affirmative litigation rotations will would become available. Work plan is determined by the supervisor.
Attorney will do the following:
Represent low-income tenants in unlawful detainer cases and rent board hearings. Ensure that all advocacy is done in a zealous and client-empowering manner. Run a monthly evening community legal clinic. Provide follow- up case work that comes from the clinic.
Supervisor up to three staff attorneys.
Assist pro per tenants in mediation and settlement negotiations at our monthly Courthouse Clinic.
Work collaboratively with ACCE organizers on campaigns related to stopping displacement.
Participate in collaborative partnerships with other community and legal services organizations providing similar services.
Complete administrative tasks, such as those related to grant management and reporting.
Participate in ongoing professional development to improve client services.
Additional tasks as assigned by Supervisor.

Requirements: 

Minimum Qualifications:
J.D. required, member of the California State Bar in good standing.
5 years experience with trial work including motion work and jury trials. Ability to manage a demanding case load; excellent time management, priority-setting and organizational skills.
Minimum two years supervising attorneys.
Experience with, or strong interest in organizing.
Demonstrated commitment to racial justice.
Spanish language fluency is highly preferred.
Excellent written and oral advocacy skills.
Ability to work effectively with a diverse range of groups, including people of color, immigrants, non-English speakers, people with mental disabilities, law students, service providers, government employees, community partners, elected officials, and law school faculty.
Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and demonstrated ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
Ability to learn-on-the-job and work successfully in a high-volume, dynamic environment.
Unlawful detainer or other relevant litigation experience preferred.
Ability to travel to visit clients, attend court and engage with the community in-person in Alameda County, as needed to perform responsibilities of this position.
