LACBA Counsel for Justice (CFJ) is the charitable arm of the Los Angeles County Bar Association. Through its pro bono-based projects, CFJ has been bringing together the Los Angeles legal community to provide access to justice for the most underserved populations for over 50 years. With the support of LACBA and our many volunteers, CFJ’s staff of 15 employees, including seven attorneys, assists thousands of people access their legal rights each year. CFJ’s immigration unit alone assists over 7,500 immigrants a year through a continuum of services from legal information to full scope representation.
CFJ is seeking a paralegal for its new Immigration Legal Services for Survivors Project (Project) which is part of CFJ’s partnership with the Central Bureau Family Justice Center (FJC). Under the supervision of CFJ’s Directing Attorney – Immigration this position will work alongside the Project Staff Attorney to develop the service model specific to this project and provide quality immigration legal services and representation to survivors of domestic violence while joining in a collaborative of service providers.
Note: This is a hybrid position with a private office located in the LACBA headquarters in downtown Los Angeles.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct intake and initial assessments.
- Assist clients in gathering supporting documents and preparing declarations.
- Translate documents between English and Spanish.
- Assist with Project management activities such as scheduling, record keeping, data collection and reporting.
- Assist with the creation of processes and tools as needed to manage the Project.
- Participate in collaborative activities with the FJC partners, such as meetings and trainings.
- Experience in immigration law, especially survivor-based immigration applications (e.g., U Visa, VAWA, T Visa).
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including patience and sensitivity with people in crisis.
- Excellent bilingual oral, reading, and writing skills in both English and Spanish.
