Position Title: Transitional Justice Consultant
Organization and Unit: Peace and Security Unit (IOM)
Duty Station: IOM, Washington DC (REMOTE)
Proposed Duration: 4 months
Length & Hours: This position is 40 hours/week; Open to candidates who are eligible
to work in the Unites States.
Salary: $5,700 per month

Overview:

Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants. Under the overall supervision of the Chief of Mission and the direct supervision of the Head, Peace and Security Unit, the incumbent will support the roll-out of a new initiative to engage pro bono legal services to support IOM’s work around land and shelter and its broader transitional justice portfolio. This initiative seeks to build a network of law firms and law schools to provide pro bono services to support IOM’s justice and legal services work. This will link emergencies work in shelter and settlements with transitional justice. They will also support IOM’s US based activities on Housing land and property in international crises, including the development of country briefing notes, conferences and events.

Category A Consultants: Tasks to be performed under this contract

1. Research the legal complexities that can arise around land-use for shelter, including camps, in
crisis settings (desk review, interviews).
2. Develop knowledge products to communicate this research to others in reader-friendly formats.
3. In close coordination with the Peacebuilding and Recovery Division in HQ, gather and systematize information from IOM colleagues in HQ and country offices on past, present and planned transitional justice programming.
4. Identify needs for legal expertise in support of IOM’s land-related and transitional justice
programming that could be covered pro bono by law firms, individual lawyers or law school
programmes.
5. Develop and implement an outreach campaign to law firms, lawyers (e.g., through public interest
opportunity boards) and law schools, to create a network of interested partners to provide pro bono
services in support of IOM’s programming.
6. Identify information, resource and training needs of network participants; time allowing, support
development of materials to meet those needs.
7. Any other tasks that may be assigned

Education, Experience and/or skills required

• JD or Master’s degree in law five years of relevant professional experience.
• 2L or 3L considered.

Travel required
• May require travel to Washington DC to work with team and/or travel to events.
