Volunteer Lawyers Birmingham (VLB) is a nonprofit organization that connects low-income residents of Jefferson County with pro bono attorneys who provide legal advice and representation.
VLB is seeking a Pro Bono Director who will manage recruitment, training, and support for volunteers. This is an opportunity to be part of a team providing critical assistance for clients facing civil legal issues involving housing, domestic relations, wage garnishment, estate planning, expungements, and more. The person in this position will maintain a high-level overview of VLB’s programs and volunteer needs and will assist the Executive Director in planning and implementing effective pro bono initiatives.
Responsibilities:
• Working with law firms, corporate legal departments, law schools, and other local organizations to recruit volunteers and develop partnerships
• Designing and implementing trainings for attorney, paralegal, and law student volunteers – including CLEs, on-site trainings and briefings, and mentor attorney programs
• Managing volunteer database and calendar system to track and organize volunteers for programs and cases, as well as coordinating CLE reporting to the Alabama State Bar
• Developing relationships with community partners and social services agencies to ensure VLB’s pro bono programs are reaching as many clients as possible and creating meaningful impact
• Coordinating efforts to implement pro bono activities and events
• Supervising at least one professional program staff member and one or more interns
• Verifying appropriate qualifications of volunteers
• Ensuring meaningful recognition and celebration of volunteer service
• Assisting Executive Director with tracking and reporting information for grants and other purposes
Salary and Benefits:
• Salary range is $65,000 - $75,000, depending on skills and experience
• Benefits include generous paid time off, health and dental insurance, optional retirement plan, and potential hybrid work schedule
Qualifications:
• J.D. and admission to practice in Alabama
• At least 4 to 5 years of practice experience in a public interest setting preferred
• Proven project management, organizational, and administrative skills
• Strong networking, interpersonal, and leadership capabilities
• Exceptional communication skills
• Demonstrated passion for public service and desire to be part of an organization working to increase access to justice
• Willingness to participate in activities, legal assistance clinics, and events held after hours and/or on weekends when necessary
