Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Inc. (ABLE), a non-profit law firm with a long history of representing people living on low incomes in Ohio in achieving equal justice and opportunity, seeks a resourceful, culturally competent, hardworking attorney for its Health and Public Benefits Practice Group. This position may be based out of ABLE’s Toledo or Dayton office.

ABLE and its partner law firm, Legal Aid of Western Ohio (LAWO), are the only law firms available for comprehensive legal representation in non-criminal matters for more than 425,000 people living, working, and raising their families in poverty in Northwest and West Central Ohio. ABLE advocates for – and with – financially disadvantaged individuals and communities to effectuate just and equitable policy changes that address the structural causes of poverty and to protect their right to fairness and justice in the legal system.
The Opportunity
The Attorney will work with our healthcare & public benefits practice group to represent clients to ensure access to healthcare and government benefits so they can live with dignity, eliminate barriers to employment and increase opportunities for families living in poverty. The Attorney will secure benefits and healthcare for clients and change public policy where needed; advance projects to improve economic independence for clients; and advocate for meaningful access to the administrative and court system.
Compensation, Benefits, and Work Location
ABLE is committed to providing an equitable work environment, including a commitment to pay equity. We are updating our salary scales, with expected completion by Fall 2024. The starting annual salary range for this position is will likely fall between $68,000-$79,300. Comprehensive fringe benefits, including health insurance and student loan repayment assistance up to $6,000 per year through the Ohio Access to Justice Foundation; Some travel between ABLE’s office locations is required.

The successful candidate must have the following skills and experience:
• Membership in the Ohio Bar or ability to be admitted by motion or temporary certification is required. Attorneys with recent bar admissions are encouraged to apply.
• Excellent legal and communication skills, computer competency, and an understanding of community lawyering preferred.
• Ability to relate well with and a commitment to legal services to people with low incomes required.
• Legal experience in government benefits and health care, or poverty law in general is helpful.
• Must have excellent interpersonal skills and be experienced in working in collaborative environments.
• Ability to communicate fluently in Spanish is helpful.
