Assistant Public Defender (multiple positions with representation in Criminal and Family Courts)
This is professional legal work involving responsibility for representing indigent defendants as assigned by the Public Defender, emphasizing criminal and family law clients
Work involves the representation of the defendants through every stage of proceedings following the arrest through any appeals
In addition to actual representation, employees in this class assist the Public Defender in the investigation, preparation, conduct, and appeal in various court and legal proceedings involving indigent defendants
Work is performed in accordance with the law guidelines
Makes court appearances with defendants for arraignments, pleas, sentences, bail reviews, court conferences, and pre-trial motions;
Interview clients and witnesses to obtain facts;
Prepares defense of clients;
Drafts letters to clients, witnesses, courts, and the District Attorney;
Prepares motions, briefs, and memorandums of law;
Consults via telephone with clients, witnesses, other attorneys, the District Attorney’s office, and judges;
Review documents;
Researches case and statutory law to prepare adequate defenses and motions;
Travel to various courts for appearances with clients
