Mission

The King County Bar Association promotes and supports a diverse and collegial membership; works with the judiciary to achieve excellence, equity, and accessibility in the administration of justice; and benefits the community through public service and engagement in public policy.

Position Mission

Reports to the Family Law Senior Managing Attorney. Provide trauma-informed legal assistance and representation to survivors of domestic violence in protection order and family law cases for the Domestic Violence Legal Advocacy Project (DV LEAD). Work in collaboration with referrals from community and systems-based survivor-focused advocacy organizations. This is a grant funded position which is contingent on continued funding.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Advocacy:

Provide representation to survivors in DVPO and family law matters;

Draft necessary legal pleadings in DVPO and family law matters and appear in court on behalf of clients including hearings and trial;

Participate in case review with the DV LEAD team for case evaluation and assessment;

Assist the DV LEAD team in training and supporting pro bono attorneys.

Administrative and Supervisory:

Recruit and supervise interns, externs and volunteers as needed;

Manage data and provide reports for grant compliance;

Perform other duties as needed.

Outreach and Collaboration:

Collaborate and coordinate with community-based agencies to support and improve services to clients and crime victims;

Collaborate with Pro Bono Services family law programs and assist in program development and enhancement.

Demonstrated understanding of the impact of race, bias, discrimination, and differential treatment of communities disproportionately composed of Black, Indigenous, and people of color, individuals who identify as LGBTQ or other sexual minorities, individuals with disabilities, immigrants, limited English speaking persons, and others who have been historically marginalized in the law and justice system;

Proficiency in a language other than English is highly desired but not required;

Good organizational and communication (written and oral) skills; Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks, prioritize, and meet deadlines;

Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others as well as independently;

Demonstrated commitment to providing civil legal services to low-income clients;

Demonstrated ability to work with clients with limited English proficiency and clients with physical or mental disabilities;

Demonstrated ability to work well in an environment exposed to secondary trauma;

Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of people;

Proficiency with technology including MS Word, case management systems, Excel, and Outlook

And who has the following education and experience:

Licensed to practice law and in good standing in Washington state;

At least two years of experience in family law including courtroom and trial experience (King County experience desired but not required);

Experience representing survivors in Domestic Violence Protection Orders;

Experience working with low-income clients, survivors of domestic violence, and clients from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds.

Salary range: 
Salary range is $70,000 – $112,000 yearly (depends on experience) with excellent benefits.
