Pine Tree Legal Assistance
Fair Housing Paralegal
Location: Options – Portland office, Augusta office, Lewiston Office, Hybrid remote

PTLA seeks a dynamic and computer savvy person to work within its Fair Housing unit and to provide client intake and support for enforcement, testing and education/outreach activities.

PTLA is Maine’s oldest and largest civil legal aid provider. Founded in 1968, PTLA operates from offices in Portland, Lewiston, Augusta, Bangor, Machias and Presque Isle. We provide advice, education, and free representation in civil legal matters affecting low-income individuals, such as evictions, housing discrimination, public benefits, consumer credit, domestic violence, divorce and custody, and legal issues affecting indigenous peoples, veterans of foreign wars, and farmworkers. Representative Tasks
- Provide program-wide client intake under the supervision of the Intake Manager.
- Eligibility screening,
- Detailed, accurate data entry,
- Potentially liaising with language translation service providers and Deaf and Hard of Hearing service providers,
- Provide legal information and referrals
- Document specific violations of state and federal Fair Housing laws
- Support Fair Housing litigation before administrative bodies and courts under Attorney supervision
- Assist with training, development, and coordination of testers and tests under Attorney supervision
- Prepare and distribute quarterly Fair Housing Newsletter
- Provide consistent and timely grant reporting
- Contribute to weekly meeting agendas
- Develop and maintain Fair Housing website materials under Attorney supervision
- Education and outreach activities(frequent travel should be expected)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Organized, discreet, detail oriented, and excellent time management skills
- Familiarity with Office 365 or Microsoft programs preferred
- Comfortable communicating with people in crisis and/or who have limited English proficiency
- Have linguistic and cultural perspectives that would aid our work
- Interest in algorithms, digital recording, databases, and geographic information system mapping

Other Requirements:
Applicant must reside in, or be willing to relocate to, the state of Maine. This is a non-exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Compensation and Benefits:
The salary range for PTLA paralegals and other non-exempt staff is currently $52,090 - $74,090, depending on experience.
