The Legal Director provides strategic legal guidance to the organization and its campaigns, ensuring legal research, policy development, and litigation align with organizational goals.
Reports to: Executive Director
Supervises: Staff Attorney
Key Relationships: Executive Team, Staff Attorney, Campaign Managers
Location: Remote
Responsibilities:
Provide consistent and strategic legal direction to the organization and its campaigns.
Provide legal research for campaigns and organizational strategy.
Identify and execute plans for power building for the organization, including developing policy and engaging in litigation.
Assist workers involved with organizational campaigns with legal matters, including representation when necessary.
Develop and manage a legal department equipped to support workers and the organization.
Develop and manage strategic partnerships with attorneys, legal organizations, policy organizations, and unions as necessary to support organizational campaigns.
Identifies and maintains relationships with outside counsel.
Conducts training on immigration and worker rights
Represents workers before USCIS and Immigration courts.
Required Qualifications and Skills:
J.D.
Admission to good standing with at least one state bar
Willingness to seek admission in other states as appropriate
Experience in grassroots, labor and/or community organizing
Passion for social justice, building power in multi-racial working-class communities, decolonizing political organizing spaces, empowering grassroots leaders, and enacting impactful socio-economic policies towards long-term systemic changes
Proven ability to handle projects, set priorities, manage details, and follow through independently
Flexibility and a willingness to take on an array of competing tasks.
