Now that the Supreme Court has ruled retroactively that juveniles cannot be sentenced to Life Without Parole (LWOP), advocates across the country are developing ideas for how to convince prosecutors and the courts to release persons previously sentenced as juveniles to LWOP. This webinar discusses successes thus far and ongoing challenges in the courts and with clients who have grown up in prison. The presenters provide samples of creative mitigation strategies.
This webinar is presented by Ashley Ratliff, JD/MSW, and Betsy Biben, MSW, LICSW, ACSW. Ashley is a Colorado juvenile defender with expertise in litigation of cases involving children charged as adults. She is the Chair of the Colorado Juvenile Defender Center's Graham and Miller Litigation Committee. Betsy is a forensic and clinical social worker and the Chief of the Office of Rehabilitation and Development at the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia. She is Vice Chairperson of the National Alliance of Sentencing Advocates and Mitigation Specialists.
